International Lathyrus day
International Lathyrus Days are an initiative of the Fernand Lambein Fund and represent the first scientific event dedicated entirely to Lathyrus sativus. These events bring together researchers and stakeholders to share knowledge, experiences, and progress related to grasspea. They provide a platform to discuss scientific findings while fostering partnerships and networking among those working to improve the crop’s productivity, resilience, and safe consumption.
In line with this mission, the event aims to give a voice to the diverse community working on this legume. We strive to highlight different perspectives and experiences, offering ample space to young researchers and providing travel grants to enable participation from across the globe.
Lathyrus Days are held every two years, either as standalone events or as side events of larger conferences.
We are currently open to suggestions for hosting the next edition in 2028. Please fill in the questionnaire below if you would like to submit your proposal.
PAST EDITIONS:
Second International Lathyrus Day
The second International Lathyrus Day was held as a workshop during the 5th International Legume Society Conference on June 8th in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
The day began with a keynote lecture by Prof. Dr. T.R. Shara, a leading plant biologist recognized for his contributions to crop genomics and plant disease resistance, particularly in legumes.
The program featured two main sessions. Session 1 – In the Lab: Molecular, Genetic and Physiological Research on Grasspea focused on recent advancements achieved in laboratory-based research. Session 2 – Bridging the Gap: Grasspea from the Lab to the Field highlighted the translation of scientific findings into practical applications. These sessions included selected contributions from travel grant recipients, chosen based on the novelty and relevance of their research.
As in previous editions, ample time was dedicated to networking. A World Café session allowed participants to connect, and learn more about each other’s work.
First International Lathyrus Day
The first International Lathyrus Day took place on June 3, 2023, in collaboration with Crop Trust and ICARDA. The event brought together leading voices in grasspea research, featuring keynote presentations by Dr. Peter Emmrich of the Norwich Institute for Sustainable Development and Dr. Shiv Kumar Agrawal from ICARDA. Both experts shared their latest findings on Lathyrus sativus, offering attendees valuable insights into the crop’s potential and practical applications.
The event aimed to foster knowledge exchange and spark collaboration within the scientific community. It also served as a dynamic platform for future contributions, with participants invited to submit abstracts. This opportunity allowed researchers and innovators to actively shape the Lathyrus Day program, enriching the event with fresh perspectives, groundbreaking research, and forward-thinking ideas.
